The Appalachian Trail
Roan Mountain Tennessee, a scenic, charming mountain town in East Tennessee, is located very close to the Western North Carolina border and the famous, Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, sometimes referred to as the A.T., is a marked hiking trail that runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. The trail’s 2,000 miles run along the Appalachian Mountain chain and cross through 14 states. Some hikers attempt to hike all the way through the Appalachian Trail, typically going from South to North. Hikers that make it all the way through the entire trail are deemed "thru-hikers" and hikers that hike the entire trail in a series of sections are called, "section-hikers". Other hikers just enjoy hiking in certain parts of the Appalachian Trail and our location in Roan Mountain and East Tennessee is one of the best spots to hike the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail crosses through 200 miles near the North Carolina and Tennessee state borders and contains some breathtaking views. Most of the Appalachian Trail in East Tennessee and the Western North Carolina border is located deep in the wilderness, however the trail is very well marked and most hikers will enjoy the rewarding terrain. Hikers can renew their spirits, hike to panoramic, mountain-top ridges, and enjoy the wildlife that abounds throughout the region.

Currently, 99% of the Appalachian Trail's land is protected by federal and state ownership. The trail is maintained by numerous community organizations and environmental groups, as well as committed individuals and annually the Appalachian Trail Conservancy oversees more than 4,000 volunteers that work over 175,000 hours to help make the Appalachian Trail a well-coordinated and maintained hiking trail.
