Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather
Mountain is probably the most widely recognized and
universally known scenic attraction in all of the
Blue Ridge Mountain range. The land that was once
Daniel Boone’s hunting grounds is today a hugely
popular, globally recognized, mountain attraction
and nature preserve. Here one can enjoy 360 degree
views, more than 12 miles of regularly maintained
hiking trails, and learn more about the native
wildlife in the area by checking out the numerous
habitats throughout the park. Long ago, the Cherokee called Grandfather Mountain, “Tanawha” which meant a beautiful hawk or eagle, however in the 19th century the pioneers renamed the mountain "Grandfather" after noticing that from several views the mountain resembled an old man, lying down. There are several great places to view the now famous profile of the old man, the most popular being the view from Hwy 105 South, approximately 10 miles from Boone NC. Hikers can even hike the entire profile of Grandfather Mountain, a feat that is not easily done!
Calloway
Peak on Grandfather Mountain is the highest
peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain range with an
elevation of 5,964 feet and is the home of the Mile
High Swinging Bridge. Visitors brave enough to
stroll across the swinging bridge will enjoy the
panoramic views both above and below, as they’ll be
standing on the bridge, which is suspended several
thousand feet above the gorge. In addition to the
spectacular hiking trails and educational nature
museum, Grandfather Mountain has several animal
exhibits where black bears, bear cubs, river otters,
cougars, eagles and deer roam and live in their natural habitats. Grandfather Mountain North Carolina is located just a short distance away from Roan Mountain and our pristine, East Tennessee cabin rentals. Vacationers enjoy spending the day hiking and exploring Grandfather Mountain, and each year in July visitors flock to our region to enjoy the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.
