Rafting
Whitewater
rafting, kayaking and canoeing are all hugely
popular activities in the Roan Mountain area. Here the Doe River, Nolichucky
River, and Watauga River provide endless fun on the
water and create great places to go fishing as well.
There are many Tennessee whitewater rafting
opportunities available near our fabulous cabin
rentals in East Tennessee.
Our East Tennessee vacation rental cabins are
located very close to the Western North Carolina
border and surrounded by the Cherokee National
Forest. Just a short drive away from these three
gorgeous rivers, rafters typically pass by our cabin
rentals on their way to both the Nolichucky River
and the Watauga River. Browse through our site and
learn more about the fun things to do in our area
and the many, East Tennessee attractions. The Nolichucky River Gorge provides great rafting adventures as you raft through 11 miles of Class III and IV rapids. Rafters begin in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina and typically raft to Erwin, Tennessee near Elizabethton, which is part of the Cherokee National Forest. The rugged terrain and gigantic rock outcrops provide some stunning, mountain scenery and most of the river passes through the area known as the Old Clinchfield coal train rail line. The Old Clinchfield coal train is the oldest railway line that carries coal in the United States and rafters enjoy seeing the train as it rolls by while going down the river.
The
Watauga River is 60 miles long and flows through the
High Country region of North Carolina and then into
Tennessee in the Carter and Washington County areas.
Parts of Watauga’s downstream in Tennessee were
dammed to help create
Watauga Lake, and are great
places to kayak and canoe. The Doe River forms just south of Roan Mountain State Park and is a phenomenal place to enjoy rafting as well as fishing. The Doe River’s calm waters are generally not well suited for thrill-seeking rafting enthusiasts; however vacationers in the area do enjoy rafting and canoeing on the Doe River from time to time.
There are several commercial rafting guides in our area that offer guided trips and provide all the necessary equipment and safety gear for your next Tennessee whitewater rafting adventure.
